Metal pipes create a nice resonance when pounded to announce one's presence.  Unfortunately, this pipe was far to thick to do anything more than hurt the beak.  After a few attempts this guy gave up and took off to find a hollow tree.

Common around any prairie slough the gregarious Yellow-headed Blackbird provides a noisy and flashy counterpoint to the more modestly colored shore birds, gulls and ducks.

One of the highlights of a trip to Frank Lake this time of year is the chance to watch the pelicans.  On this day earlier this week there were approximately 300 of these large beautiful birds resting, fishing and squabbling on the Lake.

Canada Jays were previously called Gray Jays.  They nest early in the season and only have one brood per year.  This juvenile and its three siblings were actively foraging with their parents in early May.
