Often the Orcas pass through quickly on a mission.  But on this day they were ready to play and show off.  Breaching, tail flips, and swimming upside down were the games of the day.  Here one Orca does a tail flip while the others surface for a breather.

On the West Coast equipment used in logging is often abandoned when it breaks down as it is costly to haul out. If you look in the overgrown areas it is easy to find some pretty large equipment hidden in the brambles.  This White-crowned Sparrow is using the arm of an old excavator as a convenient perch.

Common and gregarious "garden" birds, White-crowned Sparrows on the West Coast migrate up to 2600 miles to Southern California and return to the same local area each year to breed.  Their song is learned so each local group develops their own local dialect.

Metal pipes create a nice resonance when pounded to announce one's presence.  Unfortunately, this pipe was far to thick to do anything more than hurt the beak.  After a few attempts this guy gave up and took off to find a hollow tree.
